What are Cockroaches?
There are three common types of cockroaches found in New Zealand.
The German Cockroach, Gisborne Cockroach and the Native Black Cockroach.
The native black cockroach lives in the garden and is rarely associated with the house.
The Gisborne cockroach can be found inside the house, but are usually associated with wood or timber in the backyard. By far the most common cockroach seen in the house is the German cockroach. They are the most widely distributed species worldwide and are recognised public health nuisance pests and disease carriers.
They can be found in almost any environment where there is water, food and warmth including your home. The German cockroach is most active at night time (Nocturnal) and are excellent egg producers -
The female German cockroach produces and carries an egg capsule containing around 40 eggs. Development from eggs to adults takes 1 to 4 months depending on climate and Cockroaches usually live up to a year. The female may produce up to eight egg cases in a lifetime; in favorable conditions, she can produce 300 to 400 offspring.
Cockroaches leave chemical trails in their faeces as well as emitting pheromones for attracting other cockroaches for and mating. These chemical trails are thought to transmit bacteria on surfaces. Other cockroaches will follow these trails to discover sources of food and water, and also discover where other cockroaches are hiding. The German cockroach is not overly fussy about where it leaves its faeces or its diet. Feeding on human and pet food, most commonly decaying food and organic matter, they will contaminate wherever they feed with their faeces and pick up bacteria on their bodies and spread to other areas. Food poisoning and diarrhoea have been commonly associated with cockroach infestations.
Cockroaches have also been shown to be linked with allergic reactions in humans. One of the proteins that triggers allergic reactions has been identified as tropomyosin. These allergens have also been found to be linked with asthma.
Tips to get rid of Cockroaches?
General preventive measures against household pests include keeping all food stored away in sealed containers, using garbage cans with a tight lid, frequent cleaning in the kitchen, and regular vacuuming. Regular cleaning under your fridge, dishwasher and washing machine is one of the best ways to reduce cockroaches - they love to live in the motor housing of electrical equipment. Any water leaks, such as dripping taps, should also be repaired. It is also helpful to seal off any entry points, such as holes around baseboards, in between kitchen cabinets, pipes, doors, and windows.
How to use the Trappit Cockroach Glue Board Sticky Traps?
Placing sticky cockroach traps in these hard to reach places after you have cleaned helps to delay re-infestation. The traps are safe, efficient and will capture other crawling insects including ants as well. Each trap is coated with 'dry-touch, no-mess' glue and is ready to use with the food based attractant tablet on the glue surface. The attractant tablet contains the anti-ingestant "Bitrex' to prevent accidental ingestion. The glue and tablet are covered with a quick release siliconised cover paper for ease of use.
Usage Instructions:
1. Open the Trap
2. Peel the paper off the sticky base of trap
3. Pop out the flaps.
4. Build the trap by locking the tabs together
5. Place trap in convenient place where insects are likely to hide (Behind the fridge, under the sink, next to the compost bins, next to the waste bin or rubbish bin)
6. Dispose of trap when sticky base is covered with insects.
Make your own Sticky Traps for Cockroaches and other Crawling Insects
You can make your own sticky traps using the Tanglefoot Adhesive glue range of products, click to view - Tanglefoot Insect Barrier and Tangle-Trap Sticky Coating Adhesives.
To make your own traps you need a glue or adhesive that won't dry out, the Tanglefoot range are ideal for this.
One of the nice things about making your own sticky traps is that you can choose what colour backing card to use as an attractant, and what kind of insect bait you want to use.
For example, thrips are attracted to the colour of the flower they are a nuisance pest on, if the flower is purple and white - make your card traps purple and white. They don't have to be a work of art, the insects are not that fussy.
Other things to try - when applying the tanglefoot sticky trap coating or insect barrier to your trap, lightly coat the knife or spatula you are using with a thin coating of soap to help with the spreading, and you only need a thin coat of adhesive non-drying glue - 1mm to 1.6mm is adequate.
Make tunnels for ants and cockroach type insects, and you can bait them with peanut butter or jam.
